What Are Personality Disorders?

People with personality disorders are often misunderstood and judged. They are often seen as unstable or unpredictable, but in reality, they are just different.

The main characteristic of a personality disorder is an enduring pattern of inner experiences and behavior that deviates markedly from the expectations of the individual’s culture. This pattern is inflexible and pervasive across many contexts and leads to significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

People with personality disorders can be hard to deal with because they have trouble regulating their emotions. They may act impulsively without considering the consequences, which could lead to reckless behavior.
